How to Break a Heavy Porn Addiction

Porn addiction has increased with Internet use. In fact, 96% of young adults don’t see anything wrong with porn despite the hidden dangers. Is there any hope?

The answer is an astounding yes! Keep reading to learn the steps you can take to break the addiction, starting today.

Breaking Free from Porn Addiction

First of all, you’ve already taken the first step to breaking your addiction; you reached out for help. That’s commendable, and you should be proud.

Anything that remains hidden has power over you. By exposing the porn addiction, you are lessening the power it has over you.

The next steps to healing involve addressing five dimensions of your personality. The root cause of the addiction must be uncovered, understood, and dealt with to break free from it.

These five areas are behavioral, physical, relational, emotional, and spiritual. Ready? Let’s get started.

Step 1: Behavioral

Like with any other addiction, after admitting you have a problem, you must give it up; get “sober.” A Christian support group will not only support you through the process, but they’ll also hold you accountable.

Giving up any addiction involves making a promise to yourself. It may sound silly, but many people need the accountability factor to keep inner promises.

Step 2: Physical

Take care of yourself physically. It may not seem like an essential part of recovery, but it is.

Good physical health is vital for:

  • Mood Stability
  • Motivation
  • Coping Mechanisms

As part of this step, you may need medical or psychiatric help as well.

Step 3: Relational

Pornography addiction causes fractures in relationships. As part of the healing process, attend couples counseling with your significant other.

Use this safe and structured environment to talk about your behavior and thoughts with one another. Having a therapist present will help you both focus on the topics that lead to reconciliation, rather than adding to the hurt.

Step 4: Emotional

Pornography addiction is often the result of a past trauma of some sort. It develops as a coping mechanism and a way to avoid dealing with those feelings. Figuring out what that trauma was, getting to the root of it, is crucial for recovery and healing.

This step will take inner work on your part. Sometimes we bury traumatic events so deep that it’s hard to bring them back up. As you work through it, ask God to reveal the trauma and emotional issues to you.

Step 5: Spiritual

True healing involves spiritual matters and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. To Christians, this is a given, but even secular programs such as the 12-step program incorporate spiritual aspects in them.

Finding Christian-based counseling and spiritual direction is a powerful step for a porn addict. Spend time reading your Bible and in prayer. Work on developing two-way communication with God.

Remember, you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you. And that includes breaking a pornography addiction.

What’s Next?

Porn addiction is an emerging field. Traditional academia wants more research before treating it as an addiction. But, nothing is new to God, and He has already made a way out for you.
